To cement your friendship with them, you must know what you are doing with your jumper cables. The most common method used to revive a dead battery to start a dead battery from a healthy one using jumper cables. Electrical current, sufficient to start the ailing car, is supplied through the jumper cables from the good battery. With power from the battery and jumper cables of any car having the same voltage, you can probably start your car with no trouble.

The procedure is easy when done right, but you can damage a cars electrical system by not connecting the cables properly. If you have the talent to lift the hood of the car, you should be able to hook up the jumper cables properly in the correct sequence without any trouble. To jump-start your cars dead battery, line up the two cars so they are facing each other. Do not allow them to touch. This could lead to electrical shorts and dangerous sparks. Remove the battery vent caps from both the run-down battery and the good battery. Look inside and check the electronic level in both batteries. Add water if the level is low. If the water in your area has a high mineral content, use distilled water. Leave all vent caps off during the jump-starting procedure and keep the holes covered with a rag. Turn off the ignition switch and all accessories in the car that will not start to avoid any unnecessary power drains. Set the brake and place the gear selector in park for care with automatic transmissions, and in neutral for cars with manual transmissions. Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive battery terminal of the run-down battery. Connect the other end of this cable to the positive terminal of the booster battery. Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negative battery terminal of the booster battery, and the other end of this cable to the run-down cars engine block or frame. Always connect positive to positive and negative. Now, try to start the run-down car. If the car does not the start at once, start the booster car so as not to drain its battery. Try to start the run-down car again. Once you get the run-down car started and running, remove the negative booster cable from the engine block or frame, and them from the battery terminal of the booster battery. Next, remove the positive cable from the run-down battery, then from the booster battery. Finally, replace the vent caps if so equipped on the batteries.

Many late model cars are equipped with side-terminal batteries. When making a hookup on this type of battery, be very careful that the positive jumper cable does not slip off the terminal and touch a ground some nearby metal part of the car. Some of these terminals are hard to reach and so small that the jumper cable does not hold tightly. You can purchase adapters that make it easier to connect jumper cables to these terminals. After a car is boosted, it should be run for at least 20 minutes at highway speeds to charge up the battery. A battery tester can tell you whether a conventional battery has enough of a charge indicator eye on maintenance-free battery.
